This tour of Assisi allows you to get to know the city and its most famous sites. In addition to the walk inside the walls, the tour also includes a visit to external sites such as the Eremo delle Carceri, the Sanctuary of San Damiano and the Basilica of the St. Mary of the Angels with the Porziucola.

Meet your guide in the morning and visit the Basilica of San Francesco, famous throughout the world for its 13th-14th century frescoes by the best Italian painters of the time.

From there you will reach the main square of the city, Piazza del Comune. In the square you will see one of the best preserved Roman temples in Italy – the temple of Minerva – which is surrounded by impressive medieval government buildings.

Through medieval alleys and squares you can reach the birthplace of San Francesco and the Basilica of Santa Chiara.

After free time for lunch, in the afternoon you will explore Franciscan sanctuaries and sites outside Assisi with your guide.

Your tour will begin with a visit to the Eremo delle carceri. “Carceri” is a metaphorical name given to this place which today is an imposing ancient Franciscan convent built in the 15th century. on the slopes of the mountain. It incorporates the caves where St. Francis made his retreat. From there you will also enjoy one of the most evocative views of the Umbrian Valley below.

After the hermitage visit the Sanctuary of San Damiano which is the place of the vocation of San Francesco. There the vision of the crucifix took place which advised Francis to repair his church. It was the starting point of Francis’ new experience as a friar in the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

Lastly, visit the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels which protects the tiny Porziuncola under its gigantic dome. This is the tiny chapel where Francis and his first companions founded the Franciscan community and also the place where Saint Francis died.
